A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users buying such drugs must be aware of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have come off the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
