Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes about the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
