An Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my companion was considering enrolling in graduate studies in New York, we had booked a fortnight visit there en route to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Sitting next to me was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He inquired what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering department, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq walked over to me and informed me that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she responded: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his full name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in so many ways. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

Critically, that job in New York led me to a role in Europe where I encountered my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four amazing children. That encounter altered everything. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
